One more holiday is what the corporate India is thinking on this republic day. Many must have applied for a leave on Monday so that they can enjoy a long weekend. Sat - Tuesday. This is true with almost all Indians (even I am not an exception) and for almost all the holidays or festivals in our country. Few years back I used to ask question why do we celebrate Republic day, I used to get some shocking response from people. I observed that majority never knew the answer. The reason is that during our childhood we mugged up the reason to write it in a history paper but never gave a thought on it or understood it. For those who don't know the importance of Republic day here is brief history why we celebrate 26th January as Republic day every year.
After Independence, we decided to govern ourselves. We prepared a constitution - Law determining the fundamental political principles of a government, a document which shows how the people of country will be governed. This constitution was approved on 26th November 1949 and came into force on January 26, 1950. With this India became a "Sovereign Democratic Republic."
Sovereign means "not controlled by outside forces, autonomous (controlled by the people)."
Democratic means "representing to or adapted for the benefit of the people at large (for the people)."
Republic means "a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them (power of the people)."
The constitution says people of India shall be the real rulers of their country, and each citizen shall have right to "Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity". There will be no King or Queen to rule the people.
And we started to govern ourselves.
So all those who still feels that this is a mere holiday for them, think about it again. Understand what it means and try to fight for your right - Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
For this Republic Day I tried to write a verse, but I am very bad at words and writing poems. This is my first attempt so please accept my apology for not able to make it up to the mark. As I am proud of being an Indian I thought of writing something on it and would like to publish it on my blog.
I am proud to be an Indian
A country with an admirable Constitution
I am proud to be an Indian
Being a part of world's best nation
The country with full of emotion
Conflate of various religion and devotion
I am proud to be an Indian
A country that has given so many legendary creation
The only place where you find Hindu, Muslim, Christian
Living together without any separation
I am proud to be an Indian
The country known for the act of alleviation
In spite of so many contradictions
It gives us the full freedom and exemption
I am proud to be an Indian
Where “helping others” is a religion
Where people still believes in peace and pacification
Where "Humanity" the cause of our existence is a celebration
I am proud to be an Indian
A country with an admirable Constitution

Once again a great piece of information that you have put across...the poem is also good...nice try...
While its good to read the meaning of the constitution tell me what should i do other than celebrating it as a holiday...the constitution gives me the freedom...and i dont need any particular day to celebrate its formulation...i guess we already have come a long way and dont need to fight for our rights...the constitution has ensured that over the last 60 years a good support system has been built up...
sorry dude but dont agree 100% to your comments....

@Gaurav Khera
Hey Gaurav, my intention behind writing this post was to let youth of India know the actual reason of celebrating Republic day. Now back to your ques, do you think you are given equal amount of justice today? If you think so... think it twice. I am talking about fighting for your rights and it can be anything... schools ask for donations.... fight against them. People are beaten because they belong to other state.. fight against them. Engineers and MBA's are exploited in industry... fight against them. So its upto you where you feel injustice because our constituition does not support injustice. Anyways thanks for your valuable comments
