3 idiots and five point someone

Chetan Bhagat one of the famous young author of 4 bestselling novels - "Five point someone", "One night at call center", "Three mistakes of my life" and recently published "2 states the story of my marriage" is in the middle of controversy after the release of bollywood movie 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor & Bomen Irani directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The movie 3 idiots is loosely based on novel Five point someone by Chetan Bhagat. If I go one year back when the star cast of movie went to IIM Bangalore to shoot for this movie since then I am hearing that this movie is based on the novel Five point someone by Chetan Bhagat. Five point someone was the biggest hit among the bestselling novels and majority of Indian crowd was really excited about the movie 3 Idiots as they had a impression of being based on the novel which they liked a lot. However today Chetan Bhagat is in middle of controversy as it is claimed by the crew of movie that Chetan Bhagat is trying to gain the publicity as movie is a big hit.

My view is that Chetan Bhagat is himself a big celebrity and he does not need any kind of publicity. His writing is enough to make him notable. His novels and articles written in TOI reveals his talent and is followed & respected by many young Indians. He has nothing to gain by getting into such kind of controversy. In fact he don't need any publicity; my personal belief is that more people in India know about Chetan Bhagat as a famous author than people who know Rajkumar Hirani as director. I found this example in my office itself - one of my colleague was aware that 3 Idiots is based on some novel by Chetan Bhagat but he was not knowing anything about Rajkumar Hirani even though he was hardcore follower of bollywood movies.

Also the agreement what Vidhu Vinod Chopra is talking about, in that there no where clarified what percent of movie is similar or based on book. If 70% of story of the movie is similar to the book anyone would ask for the credit. Abhijat Joshi must have given a fresh and good contribution in writing the script for a movie and I duly appreciate his efforts but I guess after watching I personally feel that 70% of scenes and sequences are very much similar to the book and I guess all those who have read this novel feels the same. This clearly signifies that Chetan Bhagat should be given a good amount of credit. I feel that the story or script of movie should have the name of Chetan Bhagat as well.

I have seen movie (twice) and read novel as well (again twice) and I feel that movie has many scenes/events that are very similar to the novel. I am writing this to support the stand of Chetan Bhagat in the middle of this controversy.

I am sure Chetan Bhagat does not need such kind of controversy for publicity. I don't even blame the crew of movie, but I think the way Vidhu Vinod Chopra is reacting in press conference and other media is not so convincing and tolerable. I personally feel there is some kind of misunderstanding with the crew of movie so that they are accusing Chetan Bhagat.

Seriously man... Chetan bhagat does not need any kind of publicity and specially, he would never go for this kind of cheap publicity... apart from director producer... I never thought the Aamir khan would say something like that.

Friends..i came accross both 3 idiots & Five point someone within a week, firstly with the book. Coincidently i m also an engineer with mechanical engg degree, lastly a scienist by profession. So i can feel every word of the book n movie.
Without any biaseness,i wanna admit it that the impact of the book is everlasting. the way by which Chetan told the things is amazing n mindblowing. Screenplay of the movie was wrtitten for the general public, many of them do not have engg or even higher education background. But the movie got the success because it inherits the spirit of Chetan's work
Finally i can claim that a person, reading the book afer seeing the movie, will appreciate the book more than movie. Even a movie entirely based on the book gain get bumper success. Chetan is one of the greatest author of india in recent times. He is youth icon of india. He has to get nohing from success of 3 idiots.

    hi bhu1,

i respect ur feeling for chetan bhagat and i too love him as a writer. But sorry to say he is now want a piece of cake , he already signed a contract and get paid for it in iadvance please see the news or the net u will get enough details. I held chetan in high regards but after the proofs he is also like those who want a piece of cake thats making money. When u sign a contract that allows one to use ur story the way he wants and u have no objection, then u shud not coz u got the price for it. Wake up Chetan Bhagat, u cant fool us anymore....!!!!!

Mohsin, Five Point Someone is published by Rupa & Co. and they gave Chetan Bhagat money for that. But does that made Five Point Someone written by Rupa & Co. No, Five Point Someone's writer was still Chetan Bhagat, Right?? So, even if the publisher pays the author, the book gets the name of the author. In the same way, even if Vidhu Vinod Chopra has paid him, he still will have to give credit for his work.

    Hi Rahul,

I agree with Mohsin over here. And your point about publisher is kind of correct, but thats the system. As an author you written your thoughts and given to one publisher. Now as a publisher what I am doing with that story, selling it in higher rate or lower should not make any difference to me as an author. I should be happy that it has been directed so well that people wanted to see the movie again and again as well as who have not read the story might get inpired to read it and will take those messages which an author has conveyed.

Here at the end of the movie that credit has been given in a single line " The movie is based on the novel Five Point Someone b y Chetan Bhagat". What else I need as an author?

So sorry to say but even after having respect and love towards Chetan Bhagat I have to accept this truth, that somebody was running to have piece of cake.

Well Nihar, I m sure everybody has seen the movie, but how many really saw the "credit" line? I bet, not many. The credit line just rushed in the end with a

clear intention of making people miss that very important (for the author who has put years in writing that story!!!) line.

And also, it was indeed disheartening to see the kind of treatment Chetan got through that credit. May be u saw the credit given in a single line at the end

of the movie, but u missed something, the credit came after the name of junior artists and still photographer of the movie.

The cake alwayz belonged to Chetan Bhagat, indeed the frosting was 3 idiots!!!

I read somewhere that Chetan Bhagat is a firm beliver in Krishna. That is very strange because even being a jain myself i know Krishna teaches about not worrying for results of your actions. Why is Chetan Bhagat so worried about proper credit not given to him. As a firm Krishna beliver he should have just kept on writing....i am getting bored here in the office and i belive there is nothing right or wrong. i just like to keep the debate open....dont get me wrong...because without arguments world would be very boring place to live...

  8. Rahul Says:

Jigar, i agree to the point u r trying to make here. But i think it does not fit in properly here. Dont get offended by the example m going to state now. Lets say u have a kid who is 6 yrs. old. U have done everything and given him/her everything u could to make ur kid's life beautiful and taken every possible care of kid. Suddenly after 6yrs someone claims that it is not urs and someone else claims that the child is theirs. What will u do? U will not think abt the 6yrs of emotions and love u have given to ur kid? Would u just give away ur kid to someone else, just coz he says that it is his/hers? If ur answer is yes, then i totally support ur opinion mentioned above.

I would go for a DNA test ....jokes apart...........but i would not sell my kid....Chetan Bhagat Did.....He signed contract with his eyes open i hope......why did he do that???i dont think anyone does it with their kids.....he was not fool then he is not fool today...he is IIT and IIM pass out...Your reply just reflects your emotional attachments and feelings for him....your example does not suit your point.....adding child's example does not buy any emotional support to the arguements....get real and better arguements dude..:)once you have sold something and signed for it then cant go back and say now i want bigger price....atleast not in today's world.....cheers....no personal offence....

When you are saying ‘based on a novel by’ in a movie, you cannot have a separate original Story credit in the film – not to mention the latter upfront and the former at the end. 3 Idiots has a big front Story credit for Rajkumar Hirani and Joshi. This is just not possible as they are themselves saying the story is based on a novel. The Screenplay, definitely so, belongs to Hirani and Joshi.

  13. Rahul Says:

Jigar m sure u r one of those oh-u-knw-m-a-dude-for-sure-bt-i-suck-sometimes-mofo And Jigar i dont know if u read this, but Chetan Bhagat asked Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra to put his name as one of the authors in the "story" credit. He also said that Hirani n Joshi can keep their names above his and make him as a third writer of this story. Jigar, childs example will not buy me points...but, these are called soft words and hard arguments...over to u pal...keep it steamy...Slam Dunk!!!!
    No personal offence buddy :)
